The following are examples of some common symptoms that affect many ASD people, which can include but are not limited to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>aversions to certain foods<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a single focused special interest<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>very rigid adherence to routines<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&#8220;stimming&#8221; &#8211; repetitive and unusual behaviours such as hand-flapping, rapid blinking, rocking, tapping, etc.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>challenging behaviours<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>avoidance of social interaction<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>inability to be tactful<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>lack of eye contact<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>literal thinking with the inability to discern lies or deceit<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>meltdowns &#8211; an intense response to overwhelming situations &#8211; becoming completely overwhelmed by their current situation and temporarily losing behavioural control<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More information can be found at the <strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autism.org.uk\/about\/what-is\/asd.aspx\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.autism.org.uk\/about\/what-is\/asd.aspx\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">National Autistic Society<\/span><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are three specific difficulties which must be present before Autism is diagnosed:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Difficulty with Social Communication<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Difficulty with Social Imagination<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Difficulty with Social Interaction<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The following links are examples of tests psychologists use to determine if there is a requirement for testing for ASD:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.autismresearchcentre.com\/tests\/QCHAT.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/docs.autismresearchcentre.com\/tests\/QCHAT.pdf\"><span class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">Q-CHAT questionnaire<\/span><\/a><\/strong> is a 25-item questionnaire designed to measure the severity of ASD in <strong><span class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-red-color\">children aged 18 &#8211; 24 months<\/span><\/strong>. Early therapeutic interventions can help children with ASD live a higher quality of life and achieve major developmental milestones such as language development. The <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.autismresearchcentre.com\/tests\/QCHAT_scoringkey.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/docs.autismresearchcentre.com\/tests\/QCHAT_scoringkey.pdf\"><span class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\"><strong>Q-CHAT scoring key<\/strong><\/span><\/a> is ranked from 0-100. The Autism Research Centre says the average score across the population is 27. For boys this is 28 and for girls this is 26. If you are concerned your child has autism then you should look for a score of anything above 39.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/psychology-tools.com\/test\/cast\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/psychology-tools.com\/test\/cast\"><span class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">Childhood Autism Spectrum Test (CAST)<\/span><\/a> <\/strong>&nbsp;is a 39-item, yes or no evaluation directed at parents. The questionnaire was developed by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.autismresearchcentre.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ARC<\/a>&nbsp;(the Autism Research Centre) at the University of Cambridge, for assessing the severity of autism spectrum symptoms in <strong><span class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-red-color\">children<\/span><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The<span class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\"> <\/span><strong><a data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/psychology-tools.com\/test\/autism-spectrum-quotient\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/psychology-tools.com\/test\/autism-spectrum-quotient\"><span class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">Autism Spectrum Quotient Test&nbsp;(AQ)<\/span><\/a><\/strong>&nbsp;is a diagnostic questionnaire measuring the severity of Autism-Spectrum Disorders in <strong><span class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-red-color\">adult <\/span><\/strong>individuals&nbsp;published in 2001 by Simon Barron-Cohen and his colleagues at the Cambridge&nbsp;Autism Research Centre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The<span class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\"><strong> <\/strong><\/span><strong><a data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/psychology-tools.com\/test\/empathy-quotient\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/psychology-tools.com\/test\/empathy-quotient\"><span class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">Empathy Quotient (EQ)<\/span><\/a><\/strong> is a 60-item questionnaire designed to measure empathy in <strong><span class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-red-color\">adults<\/span><\/strong>.&nbsp;Developed by Simon Baron-Cohen at the Autism Research Centre&nbsp;<span class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\">(<\/span><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/www.autismresearchcentre.com\/arc_tests\" target=\"_blank\"><span class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\">ARC)<\/span><\/a> at the University of Cambridge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Self administering tests and information<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/embrace-autism.com\/cat-q\/#test\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong><span class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">Camouflaging Autistic Traits Questionnaire<\/span><\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;(<strong>CAT-Q<\/strong>) is a self-report measure of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/embrace-autism.com\/autism-and-camouflaging\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong><span class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">social camouflaging<\/span><\/strong>&nbsp;<\/a>behaviours in adults. It may be used to identify autistic individuals who do not currently meet diagnostic criteria due to their ability to mask their autistic proclivities. It consists of 25 statements and takes about 10 minutes to complete. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cardiff.ac.uk\/psychology\/research\/impact\/measuring-repetitive-behaviours-across-the-lifespan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">Adult Repetitive Behaviours Questionnaire<\/span><\/a><\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/embrace-autism.com\/rbq-2a\/#test\"><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/a> (Created by researchers at Cardiff University) is a self-administered questionnaire that measures restricted and repetitive behaviours in adults. It tests one of the core diagnostic criteria for autism,\u00a0<strong>restricted and repetitive behaviours<\/strong>\u00a0(RRBs).\u00a0These are behaviours such as repetitive movements; for example, rocking and hand-flapping, ritualistic behaviour, circumscribed interests, and sensory sensitivities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"\/index.php\/counselling-services\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"\/index.php\/counselling-services\/\"><span class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\"><strong>Go back<\/strong><\/span><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The symptoms of autism vary widely between people with ASD.
